ASIATOPIA8/2006 " performancw Art & the public space"

"What you see ?"

Work is performance art

Concept of  work.

The thing we see it may not real, and the think we can not see it may be real.

C.H.C.H. Company Project: “Walking - Weaving” 2006

From the past till now, humans have used different material to cover their body for warmth or beauty. Making clothes by weaving thread creates a lot of patterns and colors. Those remind us the diversity in ethnicity, ways of live, cultures and customs of each location. The revolution of cloth also tells us about the timeline of creation and modern weaving technology which fits human’s need both in function and beauty. C.H.C.H. Company Project: “Walking -  Weaving” 2006 will present and create beauty from colors, the weaving process and overlapping of threads by audiences. The process will crate a movement of pattern, form, shape and color within a fixed space.

C.H.C.H. company Project : Made in Blackburn/UK 2006

The project, entitled “Collaboration – Human – Community – Habit: Made in Blackburn,” is the second in a series following the project in Fukuoka, Japan. In Japan, Chakkrit worked with local textile students to explore creating garments from banana leaves, crossing the boundaries between art, fashion and design.

Chakkrit will be based at the Textile and Fashion department of Blackburn College until March 20 2006 and is hosting an intensive four-week project involving the participation of textile students from the college.

The project will represent a company producing clothes and decorative wears made from recycled materials, resulting in a display of the work at Blackburn College. The goal is to encourage people to think about the over-consumption of resources and to learn how to solve pollution problems through creative means.

Chakkrit is very enthusiastic about working with the students and said: "Local culture symbolises the condition of living with nature. At times, local culture's relationship with nature causes it to be seen as less developed when compared with standards set by the industrialised, western world.“

Chakkrit Chimnok lives and works in Thailand. He works with sculpture, fashion, performance and with recycled materials. He is interested in the changing form and perception of materials in order to play with audience perception and has exhibited widely throughout Asia.

Chakkrit Chimnok-Biography

Chakkrit Chimnok-Biography

Chakkrit Chimnok is a young artist who works with sculpture, fashion and  performance. Trained in sculpture at the Department Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiangmai University, Thailand, Chakkrit works with recycled materials. He is interested in the changing form and perception of materials in order to play with audience perception.
Growing up in Northeast Part of Thailand, Chaiyaphum , he’s familiar with nature and natural materials. Chakkrit used them in his sculptural works. In his thesis project, he used banana leaves to produce a series of wedding costume for a bride and set them in a wedding studio shop. He considered them as a sculpture work, later dealt with fashion model and became part of fashion performance works.
His works are more experimental from other sculpture projects. They engage the natural environment in a critical and subtle way. It was not only making a social and economical statement about the recycle culture material, but he also wanted to create awareness of using natural materials and brought them into artistic practice.
2004 He recenlty held a recycle workshop with Fly with me to Another World project by Navin Rawanchaikul in Lamphun. He was working with high school students from that area by using recycly posters and materials from local area to re-design clothes. Chakkrit has the potential to become a remarkable fashion / performance artist in the near future. Because he’s willing to take a risk to work collaboratively with other artist friends, and also with students. This will be an advantage for him to be able develop his work in a different context , and on a larger scale.

This year he has been invited to participate in the Third Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan where he will exhibit his range of banana leaf fashion and installation work. This work will also be exhibited at the Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery, U.K. He is currently based in Chinag Mai and is a member of the Beauty Suit Artist Collective.

C.H.C.H Company: Made in Fukuoka Project 2005/Japan

(Collaboration – Human – Community – Habit)

………………………………………………………………………………………

 Background

In my work, I create art in relation with one of the 4 basic necessaries of life which is cloth (the others are food, address and medicine) and present it in a form of fashion show to link my work with contemporary everyday life, people’s interest and the world in the age of information and advertising.

The project C.H.C.H Company: Made in Fukuoka will represent a company producing cloths and decorative wears made from recycle materials in a form of fashion show. The goal is to encourage people to think about the over resources consumption and to learn how to solve pollution problems.

Objectives

1.      To encourage a process of using art to make profits in different communities.

2.      To encourage a process of thinking and creating ways to solve problems in society.

3.      To provide alternative activities for the youth and public.

4.      To stimulate people to think about over resources consumption and provide alternative ways to solve problems with left materials.

Project Activities

  1. Start the project by applying volunteers for participate activities.
  2. Collect recycled materials.
  3. Divide materials.
  4. Plan and design cloths, shoes, bags and decorative wears from the materials.
  5. Producing the work for fashion show.
  6. Exhibit the work (Fashion Performance - Installation Art)

Expected Result

  1. The project would create a process of using art to make profits for the other people in different societies.
  2. The project would be an alternative choice for the youth and the public.
  3. The youth and public would be able to use the activity in order to create useful objects produced from recycle materials.
  4. The society would be aware of pollution problems and be able to find the way to solve it in a creative way.

FT3 Fukuoka triennale 2005/Japan(The Body-Imagination-Dried Banana Leaf 2005)

The Body-Imagination-Dried Banana Leaf 2005

Local culture symbolizes the condition ofLiving with nature causes it to be seen as being less deverloped when compared with standards set by the industrialized, westernworld. Thus, the west is often consiiddred as being a force that contributes to the destrution of local culture.

Everything has developed under the same paradigms which were estabished long ago. Both dissent and assent are significant in times of change,ad new paradigms bob up like mushrooms that grow when the seasons change. All structures are linked to other structures, each structure has its own dynamics  and when they come together new possibilities for change are born. The boundaried between these structures are blurred because each structures ovverlaps and mixes with other structures. This makes many forms seem unclear.

Bananaleaves are traditionally used for many functional purposes in Thai society. Through using them in my work I aim to acknowledge the importance of local knowledge, whilst at the same time allowing the material to express a new relationship with present day society. The aim of this project is to forge a connection between local knowledge and mainstream development in our era.
